INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE
‘As a student of biology I became aware of the duality of structure and function, mind and body, and I saw this reflected in eastern and western medicine when I took time out to do an Honours degree in physiology and psychological medicine and then a PhD in acupuncture and Chinese medicine in the middle of my medical degree.
Since then I have been involved in practicing, teaching, researching and writing about complementary therapies and the integration of complementary medicine into mainstream practice and have practiced acupuncture in hospitals and private practice91, taught acupuncture to medical students and researched its use in emergency departments.
I have also written about complementary medicine and weight, and travelers diarrhoea and immunity, humour and healing, and the policy and regulation of complementary therapies and the best practice for integrative medicine and have conducted research into attitudes to complementary medicine amongst medical students, general practitioners and hospital pharmacists, as well as researched complementary medicine use by rheumatoid arthritis and cardiac surgery patients. ‘
